Dan Gurvich (baritone)

Dan Gurvich

Baritone Dan Gurvich has performed with the Boston Lyric Opera, the National Opera Company, Rochester's Mercury Opera, Long Island's Ridotto Opera, Virginia's Ash Lawn-Highland Festival, The Bronx Opera Company, and Boston University's Opera Institute. Performance highlights include the title role in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, Count Almaviva in Mozart's Figaro, Dandini in Rossini's Cenerentola, Don Andres in Offenbach's La Perichole, and Gideon March in Little Women. Musical theatre highlights include El Gallo in The Fantasticks, Frank in Showboat, and the Rabbi in Fiddler on the Roof.

An avid performer of song repertoire, Dan has been a fellow at Tanglewood and Aspen Music Festivals. He was a Bach cantata soloist with the Tanglewood orchestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa. Dan's presentation of Mauricio Kagel's Prince Igor, Stravinsky, at Tanglewood was described as "fearless and solidly-grounded" by The Boston Globe. A Boston-area winner of the NATS competition, Dan holds a Master's from Boston University, where he attended the Boston University Opera Institute and studied with Phyllis Curtin.

One of Dan's favorite musical activities is singing with a good choral ensemble. One of his most memorable experiences was touring as part of the Yale Russian Chorus. Favorite choral pieces include Rachmaninoff's Vespers, Brahms' Requiem, and Handel's Messiah. He also enjoys Renaissance and contemporary compositions, and the haunting sounds of Georgian and Armenian choral music.

While living in New York, Dan was an instructor of voice at New York University. He currently works on strategic initiatives at Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine, while also completing an MBA at Cornell's Johnson School. Dan was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and lives in Ithaca with his wife, Soprano Deborah Lifton and 8-month old daughter, Maria.

Activities of the Cayuga Vocal Ensemble are partially funded by the New York State Coucil on the Arts, a state agency, and private donations. More Ithaca area events can be found at ithacaevents.com.
