Fran
Shumway (alto)
Fran has been proud to be a member of the CVE alto section since January
1996, but her musical background is anything but typical! While she holds
a B.S. in music from Mansfield University, has taught music in the public
schools, and is classically trained in vocal music, Fran has also sung
professionally with an accordion orchestra, was a lead singer in several
local "wedding bands," and once played the part of Sarah Brown in the
Dryden Footlighters' production of "Guys and Dolls," a stretch for an
alto!
In addition to CVE, Fran performs regularly with NYS Baroque, and the
Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes. She has also appeared as guest
soloist with the Cornell Chorale, the Hamilton College/Community Oratorio
Society, the Colgate University Concert Choir/Orchestra, the Mansfield
University Concert Choir/Orchestra, and the Ithaca Community Chorus.
When she's not singing, Fran serves as an admissions counselor for Cornell
University's College of Engineering. In her spare time, though, there
is nothing she likes better than to head for the woods to hike or cross-country
ski with her hubby (and best friend!), Steve.
Fran also enjoys cooking and exchanging quilting tips with fellow singer,
Diane Kubarek.
